Safety in PE  (5th February 2021)

This is a two part course with a practical focus on delivering Physical Education lessons safely, adhering to national guidelines.

Please note that the NQT cohorts of  18/29; 19/20 and 20/21 will have missed this training owing to the national lockdowns and therefore have an opportunity to catch this up by attending this training.

Cost: £100 per school - can send up to 2 delegates. This will cover part 1 and 2 which are now on separate days owing to the lockdown.

Part one will be delivered online and Part 2 (the practical element) has been scheduled for the summer term in May 2021.

Delegates will have an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues and tutors in recognising potential risks present in PE lessons (with a focus on gymnastics). Delegates will be informed of up-to-date national and county guidelines, supporting them to develop school policies, which meet the needs of each school setting. From experienced practitioners to NQTs, the course will empower staff members in the delivery of safe and effective lessons. Tutors will share supporting resources and involve delegates in an example gymnastics session with a focus on safety whilst using equipment.


The second part of the course will upskill teachers on how to teach the forward and backward roll, handstands and cartwheels. Delegates will have the opportunity to learn how to risk assess, support, differentiate and teach these four skills. They will work with children, being instructed by the tutor , to develop the skills to teach the skills. There will be opportunities to discuss how to incorporate their learnt skills into whole class teaching . They will receive resources to aid their learning.

Learning Objectives:

  • to watch and copy how to support and risk assess for forward and backward rolls, handstands and cartwheels.
  • to have a greater understanding of the teaching points for rolls and inversions and ways to differentiate.
  • to discuss ways to deliver rolls and inversions within a lesson, promoting mass activity.

This a practical based course and delegates are asked to come dressed appropriately for light activity.

Please note that lunch will not be provided. Delegates should bring their own lunch.
